Specialized Training June 2016

We just completed our Specialized Training held over three days from South to Fresno to North.  If you look at the group pictures they look very calm, cool and collected as Missionaries do but wow!  put them on a scripture mastery game and everything changes.  They get just a wee bit competitive.  Sister Clark had challenged the Mission to memorize the references and subject of 114 scripture mastery scriptures from PMG and to memorize 30 actual scriptures included therein.  As a bonus, any Missionary who wanted to memorize all 110 (we didn't require they memorize entire chapters like the Book of Enos) would win lunch at the Cheesecake Factory hosted by President and Sister Clark.  Congratulations to Sisters Blocker and Johnson and Elders Perez, Ostler, Bagley and Cummings!  Watch for pictures as we dine on Monday.  Meanwhile, we had a quiz off/face off of the mastery using Eggspert  buttons and it was a blast.  They did such a wonderful job and we will trust all fun aside and included, knowing these references will help them be even better teachers, allowing the Holy Ghost to draw from their treasured up knowledge.

President's Weekly - The Enabling Powers of the Atonement

The Enabling Powers or “Flywheel Effect” of the Atonement

Dear Elders and Sisters:

It was such a blessing to be with you in Specialized Training on Wednesday and I trust you were as spiritually uplifted.  I know we were.  I trust you left changed rather than entertained and will be more dedicated to meaningful role plays to become better teachers that we may be prepared to be a greater blessing to those the Lord has prepared to receive the gospel, many of whom the Members will introduce us to.  I will also trust you better recognize the great work you are doing and ensure you do not "come down" from doing it.  Don't allow distractions and a lack of focus to deceive and distract you from this great work you are doing.  And please do the work required to experience a "mighty change of heart"!  It will be such a blessing to you and will allow this wonderful mission experience to "go through you" and forever change you.

I also trust that you will endeavor to increase your faith and character in order to become enabled by the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  Remember, this requires an exercise of faith by obedience to commandments, commitments, and covenants coupled with applying faith to true doctrine and principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  And as you learned, this will increase your righteous character and you will "become"  a true disciple gaining greater access to the enabling powers of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  It really creates a "flywheel effect" which means a greater energy or force is created from power that is applied.  In spiritual terms, the Atonement is the Power and the "flywheel effect" are the enabling powers that make up the difference between who we are and who we need to be; what we have to offer and what is required.

I am desirous you continue to study and understand this principle so wonderfully taught by Elder Richard G. Scott.  To that end, I am providing the quotes I built this model from.  They are all from his most excellent talk; "The Transforming Power of Faith and Character, GC, October 2010).  Please study these very carefully as the truths and doctrines taught are powerful.

Faith #1  The more your character is fortified, the more enabled you are to benefit from exercising the power of faith. You will discover how faith and character interact to strengthen one another. Character is woven patiently from threads of applied principle, doctrine, and obedience. (Scott, "The Transforming Power of Faith and Character", GC, October 2010)

Faith #2  "President Hugh B. Brown said: 'Wherever in life great spiritual values await man’s appropriation, only faith can appropriate them. Man cannot live without faith, because in life’s adventure the central problem is character-building--which is not a product of logic, but of faith in ideals and sacrificial devotion to them' (in Conference Report, Oct. 1969, 105). We exercise faith by doing. Joseph Smith said that 'faith [is] the principle of action and of power' (Lectures on Faith [1985], 72). (Ibid)

Faith #3  "Your faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to His commandments will strengthen your character. Your character is a measure of what you are becoming. It is the evidence of how well you are using your time on earth in this period of mortal probation." (Ibid)

Character #1  "We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day. Righteous character is a precious manifestation of what you are becoming. Righteous character is more valuable than any material object you own, any knowledge you have gained through study, or any goals you have attained no matter how well lauded by mankind. In the next life your righteous character will be evaluated to assess how well you used the privilege of mortality." (Ibid)

Character #2   "The bedrock of character is integrity. Worthy character will strengthen your capacity to recognize the direction of the Spirit and to be obedient to it. Your consistent exercise of faith builds strong character. A secure foundation for your growing character is laid by making Jesus Christ and His teachings the center of your life." (Ibid)

Character #3   "Your happiness on earth as well as your eternal salvation require many correct decisions, none of which is difficult to make. Together those decisions forge a character resistant to the eroding influences of sin and transgression. Noble character is like a treasured porcelain made of select raw materials, formed with faith, carefully crafted by consistent righteous acts, and fired in the furnace of uplifting experience. It is an object of great beauty and priceless worth. Yet it can be damaged in a moment through transgression, requiring painful, prolonged effort to be rebuilt. When protected by self-control, righteous character will endure for eternity." (Ibid)

And other selected, powerful quotes are as follows:
#1    "An axiom we all understand is that you get what you pay for. That is true for spiritual matters as well. You get what you pay for in obedience, in faith in Jesus Christ, in diligent application of the truths you learn. What you get is the molding of character, the growth in capacity, and the successful completion of your mortal purpose to be proven and to have joy." (Ibid)

#2     "You cannot be passive in life, or in time the natural man will undermine your efforts to live worthily. You become what you do and what you think about. Lack of character leads one under pressure to satisfy appetite or seek personal gain. You cannot successfully bolster a weak character with the cloak of pretense." (Ibid)

#3     "In time one who makes decisions based upon circumstance is virtually assured to commit serious transgressions. There is no iron rod of truth to keep that person in the right way." (Ibid)

#4    "Neither Satan nor any other power can destroy or undermine your growing character. Only you could do that through disobedience. A sterling character is converted into worthless ashes when eroded by deceit or transgression." (Ibid)

#5   "The genius of the gospel plan is that by doing those things the Lord counsels us to do, we are given every understanding and every capacity necessary to provide peace and rich fulfillment in this life. Likewise, we gain the preparation necessary for eternal happiness in the presence of the Lord." (Ibid)

#6   "A testimony is fortified by spiritual impressions that confirm the validity of a teaching or a righteous act.  Often such guidance is accompanied by powerful emotions that bring tears to the eyes and make it difficult to speak. But a testimony is not emotion. It is the very essence of character woven from threads born of countless correct decisions. These choices are made with trusting faith in things that are believed and, at least initially, are not seen. A strong testimony gives peace, comfort, and assurance. It generates the conviction that as the teachings of the Savior are consistently obeyed, life will be beautiful, the future will be secure, and there will be capacity to overcome the challenges that cross our path. A testimony grows from understanding truth distilled from prayer and the pondering of scriptural doctrine. It is nurtured by living those truths with faith anchored in the secure confidence that the promised results will be obtained." (Ibid)

#7   "The devil will not triumph. Even now he must operate within the bounds set by the Lord. He cannot take away any blessing that has been earned. He cannot alter character that has been woven from righteous decisions. He has no power to destroy the eternal bonds forged in a holy temple between a husband, wife, and children. He cannot quench true faith. He cannot take away your testimony. Yes, these things can be lost by succumbing to his temptations. But he has no power in and of himself to destroy them." (Ibid)

#8   "Humility is that quality that permits us to be taught from on high through the Spirit or to be taught from sources whose origin was inspiration from the Lord, such as the scriptures and the comments of the prophets. Humility is the precious fertile soil of righteous character. In it the seeds of personal growth germinate. When cultivated through the exercise of faith, pruned by repentance, and fortified by obedience and good works, such seeds produce the cherished fruit of spiritual direction. Divine inspiration and power then result--inspiration to know the will of the Lord, power to provide the ability to accomplish that inspired will." (Ibid)

Well, that's a lot of letter and teaching but go and study it and you'll come to better understand how to access the Atonement more fully - a requirement of and blessing from this great work we are anxiously engaged in. I am anxious for you to do this that you may become more than you are, better than you can imagine in order to more fully participate and keep pace with the Lord as He hastens His work here in this part of His vineyard.

Sister Clark and I love you dearly and pray for you earnestly each and every day!

PRESIDENT'S WEEKLY - Keeping Commitments, Commandments, and Covenants

Keeping Commitments, Commandments, and Covenants

Dear Elders and Sisters:

In Abraham 3:25 the Lord says: "And we will prove them herewith to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them."  All people on the face of the earth signed up for this evidenced by their being here on earth.  They kept their first estate and proved worthy to come and prove themselves here - to follow the plan they accepted in the pre-mortal life as the Plan of Happiness.  There is a wonderful verse that follows this reference (verse 26) that has the work "keep" in it four times.  This life is about "keeping" commandments; "keeping" commitments; making and "keeping" sacred covenants!  You are here to help people "keep" their commitments they made in the pre-existence.  Please don't be afraid to open your mouths and allow the spirit to guide your words. This is much, much too important to leave anyone out.  We are the "voice of warning unto all people"!  I encourage you to love your brothers and sisters enough to invite them to "keep" commitments, commandments and covenants!

In our last Zone Conference Sister Clark taught you so very well about a spiritual cardiogram tied to your testimony as referenced in Alma 5.  Each of you left with a score based on some questions that were asked.  As we prepare for our upcoming Specialized Training I ask that you read and study Alma chapter 5 and 39 to 42.  As you do, please consider what the mighty change is that has occurred in your heart.  Please ask yourself the spiritual cardiogram questions again and come prepared to discuss these assigned chapters.  We look forward to being with you in Specialized Training next week and thank you in advance for coming prepared to learn.  Please bring ears ready to hear and hearts ready to receive.

We love you and are so grateful for your continued service and sacrifice.  I know the Savior lives and loves you.  You are His servants, His emissaries and you may be the only chance someone has to keep their second estate.  Please see them as the Father and the Son do and invite them to make and keep commitments, commandments, and covenants!

With much love,

President Clark

Trainer/Trainee & District Leader Training - June 8, 2016

Another great meeting - Every six weeks, on the same day, we bring the District Leaders, new missionaries and their trainers in for trainings.  Between the President, Assistants and I, we rotate trainings between the District Leaders who are in the Chapel and the Trainer/Trainees in the gym.  It keeps things pretty exciting!  GREAT DAY!

And check these two Member Missionaries out!  A wonderful Mother/Daughter team from Northern Utah related to President Clark.  It was an honor to have the President's Mother and Sister visit the CFM for a few days during which time they were blessed to see what a day in the life of the Mission President and his wife was like, visit to Yosemite, and celebrate a birthday (Sister Ruth Clark turned 84 on June 10th) as well as seize the opportunity to "Roast the President" granted by the Assistants (man are they in trouble).

PRESIDENT'S WEEKLY - Names to Numbers; Faces to Names!

Names to Numbers; Faces to Names!

Dear Elders and Sisters:

On the heels of a wonderful MLC last Friday I want to share with you something we can do to help move this work along and experience greater success baptizing our PIs.  It will be done simply by putting "Names to Numbers" and "Faces to Names!".  This means that as each Zone sets an inspired goal for baptisms in the month, the “bite they will take out of their unit goals”, they begin to set forth the names of those that are going to be baptized.  This will require faith but then again this is a faith based work.

By starting with numbers and then moving to names, we are demonstrating to the Lord our commitment to focus on people, His children and to help them into the waters of baptism to receive a remission of sin and begin their journey back to Him through repentance and enduring to the end.  As stated in PMG, page 137: "Your purpose is to help 'OTHERS' come unto Him through baptism and confirmation."  Note the emphasis on “Others”.  It is a work of “Ones” (D&C 18:15)! While setting goals and making plans begins with numbers, at some point early on you have to put a Name to the Number in order to truly exercise faith.  Doing so will prevent the setting of goals from merely becoming wishful thinking. Further, you will be more invested because your heart aches and breaks for people but not as much for numbers.  An example of putting Names to Numbers should take place in your nightly planning with a dialogue similar to this:  "Well Elder/Sister, we had a great finding day and found 2 NIs (New Investigators).  If you'll remember in our weekly planning on Friday we set a goal to baptize 1 this month.  Which of these 2 NIs do you feel will be the 'one'"?  Or: "Do you feel that the Lord has directed us to our 'one' in our finding today?"  If so or when this occurs, you now have a name to put with a number.  Now make sure you pray in earnest for this name (which I know you already do) but in addition pass it to your District and Zone Leaders and now your District and your Zone Members can be praying for that name as well. Further, I encourage you to engage your Ward Council and MCM to pray for these names as well.

Now, let's talk about putting Faces to Names.  Each week we are asking you as a companionship to engage your Bishop for a short period of time (this could be done in 1 hour in most areas) to go with you and meet your PIs (Progressing Investigators). This is not a lesson with your PIs and please resist the temptation to make it such.  It should simply be a “doorstep introduction” of the Bishop to your PI.  It is his opportunity to meet them, encourage them to come to Church on Sunday and let them know he will be looking for them and will want to talk with them on Sunday when they do come to Church.  The conversation might go something like this:  “Brother and Sister ______, this is the Bishop of our Ward.  He has been called to preside over the congregation you will attend of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  As we discussed, he wanted to meet you and it is a pleasure to introduce Bishop_____ to you.”  Then the Bishop will simply say something like: "It is so nice to meet you Brother and Sister _____.  I know we are really looking forward to you and your family joining us in Church on Sunday.  I will be watching for you.  And please do not worry about a place to sit, even if you are a little late.  We have a bench reserved about three rows back from the Sacrament Table (You remember seeing that/You will see where that is on your Church Tour).  I don't need to take any more of your time tonight but again just want you to know our congregation is truly looking forward to meeting you/seeing you in Church this Sunday and I hope you'll allow me a moment to come down off the stand after the meeting to greet you then as well."

Now, when your PI comes to Church, they are sitting close to the Sacrament Table, a place you have pointed out to them when you ended your Church Tour.  You helped them know in advance something of the sacredness of this ordinance and how tied it is to Baptism.  Now as they sit there they will witness the reverent manner in which young Aaronic Priesthood bearers prepare, bless, and pass the Sacrament (a tender miracle in and of itself).   They will feel something when this takes place.  They will look at the Bishop on the stand and think: "Wow!  He is The Head, The Preacher, The Pastor, of this Congregation and he came to my house.  He knows me."  This will mean everything to them and he will be your help in WC to encourage Members to reach out to these PIs that come to Church.  Further, by simply having this bench reserved for PIs, the entire Ward/Branch will know they are PIs and can take the opportunity to surround them in fellowship and a warm welcome as well.  And now you've put a Face to a Name for the Bishop who will soon be something of a Good Shepherd, a Savior on Mount Zion to bless their life as a new Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  And worthy of mention is that this is a role every member assumes for one another as well - "bear one another's burdens; mourn with those that mourn; comfort those that stand in need of comfort." (Mosiah 18:8,9)

I have a testimony that if we become absolutely dedicated to this a higher percentage of our PIs will come to Church and will be baptized.  This isn't the only thing but it is one thing that will help PIs feel welcomed and known to those who ultimately will "stand as Saviors on Mount Zion" for them.

We love and appreciate all you are doing to live and fulfill your Missionary Purpose!

President Clark
