PRESIDENT'S WEEKLY - ARISE AND STAND FORTH!

Arise and Stand Forth!

Dear Elders and Sisters:

"Arise and stand forth!"  Was the command of the angel to Alma the Younger.  I have always been intrigued by this language for what it lead to - a mighty change of heart in Alma through repentance and then a mighty change in the hearts of so many others as a result of what Alma went forth to "do".  Aaah, there's that word again - "Do"!

I have enjoyed what many of you have shared with me as a start to your Mission Vision Statements this week in your letters.  You have a good start on this but at this point only a start.  You will need to really invest in this. It will take some mental, emotional, and spiritual investment to build a Mission Vision Statement that will truly help you "Arise and Stand Forth!"  Again, I think if you use the context of what you would want others to say about you if you were all of the sudden not here, it will help you.  Some of you have chosen to have that be a very short conversation based on setting forth only one Vision item or "target". If it were the talk at your funeral, it would only be a 2 minute talk.  Don't you want more?  Don't you want to be well rounded, multi-talented and faceted as a Missionary?  Don't you want to be the one who develops his/her talents into many talents so that the Lord will be "well pleased" with you?  I know you do and simply encourage you to work at this.  It will be work that is worth it!

What follows is a lengthy, yet inspiring letter known as the Ricciardi Letter.  Please print it out (one of you should print it out without my letter as a header) as I am assigning this to be the topic of your personal study on Wednesday morning.  While some of the approaches might be outdated and some of the rules changed (I don't want anyone getting up at 4:30 until after their mission), I think it is wonderfully inspiring and instructive.  It motivates me to "Arise and Stand Forth!" To do a more marvelous work and a wonder!  I hope it will do the same for you.  I especially hope more than anything that as you read it you will make the determination to have this Mission be the one Mission that doesn't fall prey to the axiom of 20/80 or STP (Same Twenty People) baptizing.  This is the virtue in the Power of One.  Let's be the Misison that "Accomplishes" this!!!!!

With much love and many prayers for success in living your Missionary Purpose!

President Clark

Interviews - 11-2016

The President and I had a wonderful two weeks interviewing all of our missionaries.  We brought each district together at a time and as the President interviewed each missionary I trained the district on using "Short, powerful statements of truth", we wrote, reworked, and role played our statements.  As a final hooray to the training, we made "game film"  (I videoed the district using their statements as they taught the Restoration pamphlet.  I think they really enjoyed seeing themselves on the "big screen".  A great learning experience.

PRESIDENT'S WEEKLY - DO, TO ACCOMPLISH!

Do, to Accomplish!

Dear Elders and Sisters:

We are still on a spiritual high from our recent Zone Conference with all of you and couldn't be more excited about the higher ground you are all journeying to.  Thanks for coming so prepared to receive and for leaving changed rather than entertained.  It speaks of your great character.

I hope my example of trajectories and targets provided a helpful analogy that teaches the need to do the right things in order to be productive and ultimately reach the desired goal.   In other words, "Do to Accomplish" (1 Nephi 3:7)!  I was so impressed with your eternal target of Celestial Glory and trust you can see that you arrive there by hitting many intermediate targets.  In a sense, these intermediate targets serve as course confirmations that build faith and generate good works ultimately ensuring we arrive at the eternal target of Celestial Glory.

As you work to develop your Mission Vision, be mindful to "Begin With The End in Mind".  Develop a list of "Targets" you wish to achieve which will add together to help you "become" the Missionary you envision.  As you do, you will then need to determine those things you need to "DO" in order to "ACCOMPLISH" that which you desire.  And of course, all of this will be best accomplished if you listen to the spirit to guide and direct you to the right targets.

Writing a Mission Vision Statement is difficult and complex and so I feel I should offer something of a template to you for this endeavor.  You will note that first and foremost is to stay true to your Missionary Purpose and the mark of a successful Missionary:

My desire as a Missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is to always live my Missionary Purpose and become a successful Missionary (PMG p. 10).  This I will best be able to do by Accomplishing the following:
1. Accomplish _______________ by,
     a. Doing ____________,
     b. Doing ____________,
     c. Doing ____________, etc.
2. Accomplish _______________ by,
     a. Doing _____________, etc.
And so on.......and so on.....!

May I provide two examples from my Mission Vision?
1.  Accomplish being found possessed of Charity by,
     a.   Seeking to see people as Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ see them,
     b.   Being quick to offer love and slow to criticize others,
     c.   Study the Character of Christ consistently to understand better His charity,
     d.   Seeking to emulate His way of being charitable,
     e.   Seek/receive others' counsel and correction, including the spirit's chastisements to be able to...
     f.   Consistently be accountable to the Lord and repent of shortcomings and offenses.
2. Accomplish becoming a better Spanish teacher and speaker by,
     a.   Reading the Book of Mormon and PMG a loud in Spanish daily,
     b.  Teach in Spanish as often as possible,
     c.   Study new verbs and their conjugations each day and use them in a conversation or role play.

It would be easy to say I want to accomplish being a better Spanish speaker and teacher or becoming charitable but without "Doing" the right things, it would never come to pass.  Never forget Elder Scott's great counsel: "We become what we want to become by consistently being what we want to become."

As I mentioned in each of your letters to you this week, I am excited to get a glimpse of your Mission Vision Statements as you work and progress to complete them.  Please don't be afraid to ask questions and share ideas.

We love you and pray in earnest for you as you work in faith, diligence, and exact obedience to accomplish the Power of One this month. Don't forget what I shared with you in a call out on Friday from Elder Neil L Anderson of the Twelve and the examples of the same that are happening in our mission.  I include the entire quote and story here below for your reference and study.  Note the combination of faith and obedience.

“Years ago as a missionary in Philadelphia I (this was told by a Stake Presidency member) was transferred to an area that hadn’t had any baptisms for many months. The mission president instructed us to ‘break the curse’ and find and baptize someone. So my companion and I set a goal of trying to find and baptize just one person in one month. We worked hard, exercised our faith, fasted, and prayed and within a week had found a few good families to teach—one was exceptional and was progressing well. . . . With one week to go before the end of the month we went to their house to have a family home evening with them, only to find a note on the door that read, ‘Elders, please do not ever come back!’ That didn’t stop us, and we knocked on their door many different times on many different days, but no one ever answered the door. Our other investigators weren’t progressing very fast and so we continued to talk to everyone to try to find someone. Sunday was the last day of the month, and by Saturday it wasn’t looking good and my faith was struggling. “Saturday night we had gone to bed when the phone rang about 11:00. The person calling said that he had just transferred to the naval base in south Philly and that he had been taking the discussions and was going to be baptized on Sunday and he was wondering if he could still be baptized. That experience changed my life forever.” Miracles do change lives. I have experienced these miracles myself, and I have witnessed them hundreds of times in the lives of obedient missionaries, their spirits burning with faith in Christ. Let us always protect this precious flame of faith. “For eaglets, the thrill of soaring begins with the fear of falling.”

There is a power that can cause things to happen that need to happen. There is a spiritual force that can stir a mortal soul toward the spiritual, motivating deeper study into the Book of Mormon and more prayer with real intent. Faith is a power, and it can cause things to happen that need to happen. It can cause a soul who is good but dormant to awaken to God. (Anderson)

“Faith is a principle of power. But that power usually comes in a response to faith.” (Uchtdorf)

It's going to be a December to Remember!

With much love,

President Clark

President's Weekly - The Role of The Book of Mormon

The Role of The Book of Mormon

Dear Elders and Sisters:

I feel guided to remind you of the Role of the Book of Mormon in conversion.  Recently you have been studying it with "real intent" to better understand Faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ and to recognize His Christ-like characteristics.  PMG states: "The Book of Mormon is powerful evidence of the divinity of Christ."  Your personal testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon will give you "confidence that the Holy Ghost will testify to anyone who reads and ponders the Book of Mormon and asks God if it is true with a sincere heart, real intent, and faith in Christ.  This witness of the Holy Ghost should be a central part of your teaching." (PMG page 103)

I offer a few quotes from Prophets to remind us of what we desire these investigators discover.  I think that if you'll consider them as "un-baptized members" perhaps your perspective may change just a bit.  The Prophets' council on reading and studying the Book of Mormon is clear to the members of the church and as you remember that you are trying to ultimately help your investigators achieve the same love for and desire to read and study the Book of Mormon, this slight shift in perspective will help you.

From President Benson (our Great Book of Mormon Prophet): "It is not just that the Book of Mormon teaches us truth, though it indeed does that. It is not just that the Book of Mormon bears testimony of Christ, though it indeed does that, too. But there is something more. There is a power in the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of the book. You will find greater power to resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid deception. You will find the power to stay on the strait and narrow path. The scriptures are called “the words of life” (D&C 84:85), and nowhere is that more true than it is of the Book of Mormon. When you begin to hunger and thirst after those words, you will find life in greater and greater abundance."

And he went on to say: "The Book of Mormon is the greatest single tool God has given us for the conversion of the world." (Ensign, October 1986)

"The Book of Mormon is the instrument that God designed to sweep the earth as with a flood (see Moses 7:62), to gather out HIs elect.  This sacred volume of scripture needs to become more central in our preaching, our teaching, and our missionary work.  My beloved brothers and sisters, we hardly fathom the power of the Book of Mormon, nor the divine role it must play..." (Ensign, Nov 1988)

From Elder Bruce R. McConkie: “We are so wound up in programs and statistics and trends, in properties, lands and mammon, and in achieving goals that will highlight the excellence of our work, that we have ‘omitted the weightier matters of the law.’ … However talented men may be in administrative matters; however eloquent they may be in expressing their views; however learned they may be in the worldly things--they will be denied the sweet whisperings of the Spirit that might have been theirs unless they pay the price of studying, pondering, and praying about the [Book of Mormon].” (In Regional Representatives’ Seminar, 2 Apr. 1982, pp. 1–2.)

"Few men on earth either in or out of the Church, have caught the vision of what the Book of Mormon is all about.  Few are they among men who know the part it has played and will yet play in preparing the way for the coming of Him of whom it is a new witness...The Book of Mormon shall so affect men that the whole earth and all of its peoples will have been influenced and governed by it...There is no greater issue than this: Is the Book of Mormon the mind and will and voice of God to all men?" (Millenial Messiah, pp 159, 170, 179)

Once you have placed a Book of Mormon and taught a lesson, when you return to teach the next lesson and you discover your investigator has not read the Book of Mormon, will you please adopt Elder Holland's attitude and be "devastated"?  Will you then put on hold what you were going to teach and read the Book of Mormon from the Introduction Page with them for the next 20 minutes, bear your testimony of the Book as Another Witness of Jesus Christ, pray, and then set up your next appointment thus letting them know how important and central reading the Book of Mormon is to "knowing" the truth of your message. This will help them know that it is truly the "cornerstone" of our religion and they will need to read it in order to know of the truthfulness of the doctrines of the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Remember, it "is the greatest tool the Lord has given us for the conversion of the world"!  Let us it as such! Help your soon-to-be members discover the rich blessing of the Book of Mormon in their lives as soon as possible and over and over again.

With much love for the Book of Mormon and for you!

President Clark
